Letters in the Environment
For this project, my goal was to explore the relationship between 3D space and flat typography. I started by constructing a lowercase "a" from Gill Sans using cardboard, carefully crafting its form to match the typeface’s geometric structure. Once the physical piece was created, I photographed it in various locations throughout the city, contrasting the industrial, mechanical nature of the letter with the organic, natural backgrounds around it.
The next phase involved translating the images and concept into a digital format, where I designed a proposal for a typography exhibit at my school. I used the photographs to juxtapose the stark, precise form of the cardboard letter against the unpredictable textures and shapes of the city environment.
This project challenged me to think critically about the contrast between the mechanical nature of typography and the more fluid, organic elements of the world around us. By experimenting with this visual tension, I created a concept that explores how the two realms can coexist and interact in unexpected ways.
